Setting up EAL classes
Setting up EAL classes
EAL reports can be created the same way reports for other subjects are created. As the only difference
between these reports and English reports are the EAL Assessment items, the easiest option is to make a
copy of the report that contains the English progression points and modify these.
In eSIS, click on the Assess tile
Open Subject Assessment Area Maintenance:
Navigate to the first report that contains the English assessment items for the year level you need to create an EAL report for (normally the General or English report) (1)
Right-click and select Copy (2).
Re-name the report by adding _EAL to the end of the code (1).
Replace the English progression points (1) with the relevant EAL progression points (2). Remember to link each one to the relevant strand and pathway of the EAL curriculum by clicking Find (3) and selecting the relevant strand (4).
Add the EAL Progress indicators (these are required for all EAL reports). Click here for instructions.
Click OK at the bottom right to Save
Repeat for all other Year Levels that require an EAL report.
Setting up EAL classes
Once the reports have been generated, it is necessary to create a class for each class containing EAL students. If the school has students in Year 2 in each of Pathway A and Pathway B, separate classes will need to be created for each.
In eSIS, click on the Assess tile
Open Class Maintenance.
Click OK.
Right-click on the class in the window on the left that is used for English assessment for the year level required (1)
Select New (2).
Add _EAL to both the code and description lines in the Create New Class window on the right. If the class is for Year 2 students, add _EALA or _EALB depending on which pathway is being used
Click Next.
In the next window, select the Assessment code (1) that matches the relevant EAL report (2).
Select the staff member responsible for teaching the class (1)
Click Finish (2).
Adding EAL students to the EAL classes
Once the class has been created, the EAL students in that class need to be added.
Click on the Students tab in the window on the right.
Click Add Students on the right
In the Bulk Add of Students to Classes window, use either the ID field (2) or the Find option (3, 4) to add the students to the class.
Note: If adding large numbers of students, it is recommended that you use ID numbers as this process is much quicker.
Once the student has been selected (1), click Add Classes (2)
In the window that opens, click Yes (3).
Click OK.
Repeat for each student you need to add to the class.
Removing EAL students from mainstream English reports
Once the students have been added to the EAL classes, they should be made ‘non-assessable’ for the mainstream English report.
In eSIS, click on the Assess tile
Open Class Maintenance
Click OK.
Highlight the mainstream General/English class in the window on the left.
Click on the Students tab in the window on the right.
In the list of students, highlight the name of the first student that was added to the EAL class
Click Modify on the right of the window.
In the box that opens, uncheck the box next to Assessable Class
Click OK.
This will leave the student in the class but remove them from reports for the current semester.
